Budha Subba Temple is located at Bijayapur of Dharan, Nepal which is about 136mi (or 220km) South-East of capital city Kathmandu. It is a famous religious shrine of the Kirati people. A person who visits the temple believes it will fulfil their wishes and bring good luck to their friends and families.
This religious place is the tomb of the last Limbu King of Morang, Budhi
Karna Raya Khewang. The King was tricked by the people representing Prithvi
Narayan Shah of Gorkha Kingdom to come to Bijayapur – Dharan for negation and
was killed there. His soul is believed to have wandered around the Bijayapur
area where his tomb is located. They local Limbu people believe that his spirit
is friendly and helpful. The people started worshipping the soul of the deceased
King (Subba / Hang means King in limbu language).
Besides being the pilgrimage, the temple also holds a
significant place in the life of true lovers. The bamboo trees found in the area
don’t have the top ends. Young couples believe that if they write their names
on bamboos, they will live together forever. Lot of young people write their
names on the bamboo trees in hope to live together for life. However, due to
the danger of untimely death of the bamboo trees, the couples are not allowed
to carve their names anymore. Instead, they tie the colourful sacred threads on
the fence as tying the threads is believed to make your wish come true and also
unite you with you true love.
In ancient time Bijayapur –Dharan was the capital city of the Kingdom of
Morang. The Kingdom was one of the political and economic centres of the
region, currently called Limbuwan.
